The History of Star Trek CCG: 2003
Updated April 23, 2004
The year 2003 began with the first Star Trek CCG Maiden Voyage tournaments,
championship-level events allowing participants to earn premier points.
I've asked DGMA to put together a summary of the 2003 events and winners
to include with the timeline; I'll add it to this page as soon as it's available.
In March, Decipher announced a nine-card
foil subset of Second Edition base set rare cards. Tournament winners
soon began receiving these foils as prizes, and they were also available
as an incentive
for pre-ordering the Energize expansion.
The first expansion to the Second Edition base set, Energize,
released in May. Although it introduced no new affiliations or mechanics,
it expanded and enhanced the existing themes begun in Second Edition and
added Maquis and Kahless themes to the mix. Around the same time, Decipher
announced the long-postponed All Good Things
set for First Edition, which resolved all the outstanding "broken links"
including some which had already been resolved in a preliminary fashion
with a First Edition-compatible Second Edition card. All Good Things debuted
and sold out in July.
July was also notable for the earliest-ever-in-the-con-season DecipherCon/World
Championships, as DecipherCon
was held for the first time as a "con-within-a-con" at Gen Con
Indy, which in turn was held uncharacteristically early (Gen Con has typically
been an August event). Matthew Frid became the first Star Trek CCG
Second Edition
World Champion in a final face-off with Hayes Hunter, while Brian Schrader
took the Star Trek CCG First
Edition World Champion title. Also at DecipherCon, two of the ten new
(non-retailer) inductees
to the Decipher Hall of Fame earned their place on the plaque for their
Star Trek CCG contributions: two-time World Championship runner-up
Todd Soper and Ambassador Tristan Marsman. Check out the DecipherCon 2003
photo galleries for
a look back at last year's festivities.
September brought the Star Trek CCG two new affiliations (Borg and
Dominion), eight new keywords, modal missions, and no new rules in
the Call to Arms expansion set. With both starters
and boosters, Call to Arms was positioned for sealed deck play as well as
constructed.
