Special Guests and World Champions:
Day Three Wrapup
The big stories of Saturday of course were the World Championship
semifinals and finals. The 16 semifinalists for each game put in a grueling
day six rounds of Star Trek CCG and an early-morning-start
two-out-of-three match elimination tournament for Lord of the Rings
TCG before yielding up their top two players for the finals. Technical
problems got those finals off to a late start, with STCCG's Matthew Frid
and Hayes Hunter finally facing off at 7:30 PM and ending about two hours
later with Matthew the new champion. (See related
article for more details.) LOTRTCG finals were to follow.
[Late-breaking news: Michael Dalton won the LOTRTCG title
in the we hours of the morning. More details later.]

Gamers who didn't make the semifinals could choose from a
variety of other tournament events like Premier Series and Maiden Voyage
qualifiers. Fifteen women participated in the LOTR TCG Arwen Championship,
run by Rider of Rohan Kim Logie, with Dung-hanh Nguyen of Quebec, Canada,
the winner of the title, a complete 9-language set of Sméagol cards
signed by Andy Serkis, and a bust of Samwise Gamgee. Roleplayers had their
choice of several Star Trek and Lord of the Rings RPG adventures.

What else was happening during this long day? On the booth,
special guests Sean Astin (Sam) and Brad Dourif (Grima) held packed autograph
sessions, signing an endless stream of cards large and small. The Golden
Hall of Edoras was finished at last, making a splendid display on the store
counter. "Where's Tom Bombadil?" stickers were everywhere. LOTR
TCG players between rolling booster drafts played an oversized-card match.
Outside the exhibit hall, a city built from donated cards sported some familiar
card backs in selected locations.

In a few hours from the time I write this, players and Decipherians
will gather in the Decipher tournament area for the DecipherCon awards ceremony.
Watch the website for coverage of the awards, including new inductions to
the Decipher Hall of Fame!
