Out With the Old and In With the New: Top 10 Resolutions for 2003

by Sean Smallman
Star Trek Brand Manager

2002 was a very good year for me: I improved my game of The Lord of the Rings TCG; learned how to play Star Trek CCG Second Edition; was introduced to two new RPGs that use a really cool game system; and met many fans of Decipher games, Middle-earth, and the future universe according to Starfleet. I also caught up on most of my CCG/TCG collections – with only a few cards missing on a couple of sets – and met a lot of new trading partners in the process. On a personal note, I made some new friends at church, built a new deck in my backyard with my own two hands, and managed to surprise my wife with an unexpected Christmas gift. Yes, life is good when you decide to 'make it so.'

Last week, I decided to review 2002 and evaluate what worked for me and what didn't. I decided to look at 2003 as an opportunity to improve upon things even more. I spent a little time on January 1st thinking about my goals for this new year. I thought of things that I would like to see happen regarding my family, finances, career, and personal life. I wrote a number of them down and plan on reviewing them at a later date, just to see how I'm doing. Yes, I made a New Year's Resolution List. Maybe I'll even tell you how it went at year end.

Then, on January 2nd, I thought about some goals for Star Trek and its fans for 2003. To help me stick to them, I'm going to share these with you.

Sean Smallman's Top 10 List of Star Trek Resolutions for 2003:

10. Find episodes of Enterprise that I missed last year on tape – and find the time to watch them with my wife!

9. Give up on my own ideas and agree with my wife to not name our future sons Tucker and Tripp. I wonder if she likes the name T'Pol for a girl?

8. Try to complete each current set of STCCG before the next set comes out so that I don't have such a long "wants" list.

7. Play something besides Klingon for a change. Cardassian is looking interesting. Oh well, as long as it's not Bajoran – I don't like the creases on their heads.

6. Find a new use for the phrase "It's a Whole New Universe!" each week. Wait to spring it on the Marketing team during our planning meetings.

5. Sit down and play an entire "episode" of the RPG at a convention – if only I can get the time away from working the Decipher booth!

4. Buy enough packs of Second Edition to create two competitive decks instead of the one that I am currently losing with.

3. Attack the Clix figures I got last year with my mechanical pet Tribble and watch them run in terror from the gigantic hairy monster.

2. Renew my Star Trek Fan Club membership and Communicator subscription – maybe even for multiple years so that I don't have to repeat this again next year.

1. Box up my First Edition sets on my closet shelf in order to make room for my Second Edition collection!

There is an expression they say on New Year's Eve: "Out with the old and in with the new." I'll still play my First Edition decks from time to time, probably when I get together with my cousin Bob in Maryland. But, for the most part, I'm planning on taking my Second Edition decks with me when I travel or hang out with friends. There is something exciting and refreshing about a new edition of an old favorite game. Like the time when Kirk stepped onto the bridge of the completely overhauled Enterprise – it felt familiar, yet new, even a bit dangerous. After completing an eight-year mission, the Star Trek Customizable Card Game is about to embark on an entirely new mission – a second mission – and I'm glad to be aboard. I invite you to join me on this new voyage. After all, it's a whole new universe!
